Got an old cellphone? Check out CellForCash

September 2, 2007 by Tricia

Have you ever wondered what to do with your old cell phone? I’m sure that there’s a lot of people out there with an old mobile phone or two stored in a drawer some where in their home that they’ve kept simply because they didn’t know what to do with it. Worse, there’s a lot of cell phones in landfills throughout North America possibly leaching toxins such as lead into the soil and eventually into the ground water.

I think it would be great if all cell phone providers, when they come out with their awesome deals on new phones that we must have, would offer rebates on our old phones no matter how old they are or their condition. They don’t though, do they?

That’s where CellForCash.com. They’ve create a program that allows US residents to recycle their old cellphones. Simply visit their site and use their mobile phone manufacture and model search to see if your phone is listed and how much of a rebate you’ll receive from CellForCash. You can then finish filling out your contact information, decide if you want the rebate or if you’d like to donate it to a charity called the 911 Cell Phone Bank which benefits seniors and victims of abuse and then CellForCash will send you a free postage paid box with which you can submit your phone.

Cellforcash.com currently lists over 600 cell phone models that will qualify for rebates. The rebate payout ranges from $4 to $300 or more.

Just think about it. When you use Cellforcash to recycle your cell phone, not only will you be protecting the environment by keeping one more old cell phone out of the landfills, but you can also benefit by receiving some money back for your phone or donating those funds to a worthwhile charity.

You should read the article “Why should I recycle my cell phone?” which explains why recycling cell phones is so important. Did you know that each year more than 140 million cell phones are retired and that not even 5% of those old phones are recycled? Isn’t that a terrible shame?

Did you know that the circuit boards and other components that make up cell phones contain toxic materials such as arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, cobalt, copper, mercury, nickel, and zinc, and brominated flame retardants. As I said earlier all of these chemicals and heavy minerals could leach into the ground waters and eventually effect our drinking water or damage the environment in ways that would eventually have an effect on ourselves and our health.

Old cellphones in decent condition might be used in other markets or countries, or the components and materials within your turned in cell phone might be recovered, recycled and then other industries might use those recycled materials to make new products.

Microsoft Touch Screen

June 9, 2007 by Tricia

Bill Gates demonstrates Microsoft’s Touch Screen

I know I’m a few days late with this news but I absolutely love the idea of Microsoft’s new touch screen product. You’ve seen the technology to some extent in restaurants where waiters and waitresses can simply touch a screen to select a menu item and place the customers order.

Now this type of technology, greatly enhanced, will be coming to our homes in the near future. I’m sure the touch screen will be out of many peoples budges in the beginning but as it grows more popular I’m certain that many people will want to have and use this new tech product.

Need to upgrade memory

May 21, 2007 by Tricia

I’m trying to help a friend increase the memory in her Dell laptop computer. What she really needs to do is purchase some Dell Memory modules to either add on to her system or to replace the current memory that’s there.

The online store that I linked to above sells the Dell Memory that she needs, but the shipping charge to Canada is fairly high, especially with border duty, and since upgrading memory for a laptop computer is not all that cheap we’d like to purchase the memory components in Canada.

I guess it could either be an online store, or a store somewhere in Southern Ontario. We don’t care which … we just need to find out where to get the laptop memory that she needs in the very near future. Her laptop is an older model so she figures if she can upgrade the memory and make it work a bit better and faster she might be able to live with the computer for a little while longer while she saves up for a new one.

Does anyone know of a good computer memory seller in Canada?

Titanic Museum

May 21, 2007 by Tricia

I was just reading on MSNBC that there’s a new museum called the Titanic Museum in Branson Missouri. This new museum is expected to increase tourism in Branson, to the point that they are expecting well over 7 million visitors this year.

The museum is the worlds largest Titanic Museum and considering that the Titanic was probably the most technologically advanced ship of it’s kind in it’s time I’m sure technology buffs will be heading to the museum to check out the 100 foot tall building built to resemble the actual Titanic.

The entrance is through a mock iceberg tip that juts out of the ship’s side. Inside, visitors take a 90-minute walk past more than 400 artifacts and reconstructions of the ship and the life stories of many of its passengers.

Check it out if you are ever in Branson!

Have you seen the new solar house markers?

May 21, 2007 by Tricia

solarhousemarker.jpg Chris and I went shopping over the weekend – mainly to stores like Home Depot and garden centers to get supplies for our garden.

I always tend to stop and look at the lighting section in places like Home Depot and stores that sell specialty lighting. I love solar lights. They look so nice in the garden, and the technology has advanced quite a bit.

The first solar products we bought 6 years ago didn’t really last that long. Well, we still have them, but we have to replace the rechargeable batteries much more often than in some of the solar products that we’ve purchased in the last three years.

One thing that I’ve noticed when looking at the various solar lighting and other products is that they now have a solar house marker. Actually I think there’s a few different brands.

Some of them are quite nice, such as the type that I’ve displayed above. Others can be set on the ground or perhaps a porch step and look more like a rock with house numbers on them.

What do you think of Solar house markers? Would you buy one?

May 16, 2007 by Tricia

I think I just found the service that I’m going to be refering some of my friends and relatives to! It’s called 866GeekNeed.com. The company provides phone based tech support.

They can help you with any of your computer related problems over the phone. It does cost $1.99 a minute after the first three minutes, so if you have a problem I’d be prepared when you call.

Looking at their site it seems that they are experienced in dealing with all types of computer, software, hardware and computer accessory (printers, scanners) type problems. Naturally the most common types of problems that people need help with are virus removal, spyware removal, email support, and connectivity trouble.

Wear this MP3 player on your wrist

April 25, 2007 by Tricia

watch06_wenn1252489_0_0.jpg This MP3 Sports Wristband is one of the latest concepts in active media wear.

Nathan Davis came up with the idea for this wearable tiny iPod shuffle as a way to solve some of the problems that occur with larger sports model players such as slipping and skipping.

The Sports wristband is made of silicone and you can wear it on your arm or wrist. Music is transmitted via Bluetooth headphones which will eliminated the tangle of wires so common with many of the other conventional headphones.

There’s no word yet as to whether this product will actually go into production. It does seem like it could be a hit. What do you think?

Radia Cell phone

April 18, 2007 by Tricia

radia_phone.jpg Do you believe that this circular object is actually a cell phone? Yep, it is. It’s a clear circular concept phone designed by Michael Laut. His Radia Cell Phone seems to draw it’s inspiration from coasters doesn’t it?

Almost everyone has a cell phone these days, and since they have become such a common item it’s become important for cellular phone makers to start creating designs that stand out from the crowd. Laut says “The Radia phone concept expresses simplicity in form and sophistication in function and user interface. The outer rim, which is made of brushed aluminum makes both a refined professional statement.”

The touch display is large enough to read and display many types of information. Yet the phone is small enough to easily fit into a pocket or small purse.

What do you think of this new mobile phone design? Would you purchase one? If you would buy one would you buy it just because it’s so unusual?
