Have you seen the new solar house markers?

May 21, 2007 by Tricia

solarhousemarker.jpg Chris and I went shopping over the weekend – mainly to stores like Home Depot and garden centers to get supplies for our garden.

I always tend to stop and look at the lighting section in places like Home Depot and stores that sell specialty lighting. I love solar lights. They look so nice in the garden, and the technology has advanced quite a bit.

The first solar products we bought 6 years ago didn’t really last that long. Well, we still have them, but we have to replace the rechargeable batteries much more often than in some of the solar products that we’ve purchased in the last three years.

One thing that I’ve noticed when looking at the various solar lighting and other products is that they now have a solar house marker. Actually I think there’s a few different brands.

Some of them are quite nice, such as the type that I’ve displayed above. Others can be set on the ground or perhaps a porch step and look more like a rock with house numbers on them.

What do you think of Solar house markers? Would you buy one?

Recover files that you’ve accidently deleted

May 18, 2007 by Tricia

file-recovery-logo.gif I almost decided to call this post “Oops I did it again”. Why? Well, I know some people who constantly have problems with their computers. I spend hours with them either online, on the phone or visiting their homes fixing their computer for them. Days or weeks later I inevitably get a call from them saying “Remember that problem I had a few days ago? Well it happened again.”.

The problems that I fix most often are due to opening email that contains a virus or downloading a program that contains a virus. If these people would get decent anti-virus protection perhaps I wouldn’t waste so much time helping them!

The viruses they get on their computer end up either deleting files that their system needs to work properly or corrupts the files. What’s worse is that sometimes the people I try to help try to fix the problem themselves and not really knowing what they are doing they end up deleting important files as well.

That’s why I’m so happy that there’s a new program called Active File Recovery. You can use the program to restore files that have been accidentally deleted or that have been deleted or altered by a virus attack. It will even help restore files that have been lost when your system crashes or that are lost when the power fails.

It’s easy and safe to use. The program is definitely a reliable and efficient data recovery tool. I’m planning on purchasing a copy of this program myself, and you can bet I’ll be urging the people who’s computers I fix regularly to get a copy of this software too!

One great thing about this software is that if you suddenly find that you can’t boot up your computer you can use the CD/DVD ISO image that comes with the Active file Recovery Enterprise Installation. You can burn a copy in order to get a bootable CD or DVD with a lightweight version of Windows Vista that will run in RAM. Once you are able to boot your computer with the disk that you made you can then use the Active file Recovery software to recovery important files that might have been deleted and that might have caused the crash.

With this program you’ll also be able to perform Partition recovery. So if you have had a partition loss or the partitions been damaged by formatting you can repair it using Active File Recovery professional. The program can also be used to recover media files such as photos, deleted files from flash memory, and data that’s been lost or formatted from memory cards.

You can download a demo version of the Active file recovery software if you’d like to check it out, or you can simply purchase one of three packages – Standard, Professional or the Enterprise package that are priced from $29.95 to $99. Corporate licenses are also available. All of these products include free updates and technical support.

Web Conferencing and it’s future developments

May 10, 2007 by Tricia

More and more companies are starting to use web conferencing technology as a way to conduct business meetings with clients, or other branches of their company. They’ve also been using web conferencing to conduct seminars, both for employees as in in educational sessions, and for customers too.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the online colleges started using web conferencing to begin teaching some of their classes. Wouldn’t that be a great idea. Take a course from home – but attend class on the web?

My husband was watching a documentary the other day about future technology. I believe the documentary was created in the late 80’s or very early 90’s. One of the “Future” technologies that they discussed was the ability for everyone to be able to partake in virtual conversations.

So instead of just talking on the phone you could sit yourself down in front of a screen, perhaps select a background for yourself and call up your family, friends or business associates and talk to them face to face in real time. Very much like what video conferencing is today – but with a little bit of extra flare added in.

I think we’re almost there.

Getting organized

May 8, 2007 by Tricia

Like many of you, I have a small area of my home devoted to my computer area and I suppose office if you could call it that. In this area I spend the majority of time working directly on the computer – working on my sites, other peoples sites, checking out forums, answering email and paying bills.

I have a scanner and printer in this “office” area too. I don’t use my printer all that often, but I find it such a pain to have to go to one of the big box stores to buy printer ink, regular or photo paper. I find them much too pricey and I’d love to find a great place to get some discount office supplies. While I’m at it, I want to get some kind of file system to keep bills that need to be paid, and ones that have been paid in, as well as other important papers.

I think I could be even more productive if I was able to organize my work area better.

Speaking of which .. what does your computer area look like? Is it a cluttered mess or very tidy?

Remove the no follow tag and become an I follow Blog

May 1, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve always had some form of linkage on my sites that allowed my commenters to get a real link. By this I mean the links did not have the awful nofollow tag. Instead, the search engines were able to follow the link and index it.

Now, I’ve discovered that there’s a whole movement out there called the I follow movement. It’s caught on like wild lately and I actually started a blogroll on one of my other blogs for people who have removed the nofollow tags from their sites comment area. The blogroll is called the “Do follow blogroll” and anyone with a blog (not a website!) can join if they have removed the nofollow tags from their site, added the blogroll which I will supply the code for once I hear from interested parties, and preferably do not have their comments set to registered members only.

If you want to get rid of the nofollow tags from your blog you can use this WordPress plugin if you have a wordpress blog or this other do follow plugin. If your site is on blogger you can follow these easy step by step directions to remove the nofollow tags from your comment area.

Once you’ve removed those tags, and or comment on a site that has the nofollow tags removed you’ll find that the comment links left get indexed in the search engines, added to technorati thus raising the sites Technorati rank, and once all those links are counted by google as backlinks to your site you might even get higher PR.

Become a follower.

Wear this MP3 player on your wrist

April 25, 2007 by Tricia

watch06_wenn1252489_0_0.jpg This MP3 Sports Wristband is one of the latest concepts in active media wear.

Nathan Davis came up with the idea for this wearable tiny iPod shuffle as a way to solve some of the problems that occur with larger sports model players such as slipping and skipping.

The Sports wristband is made of silicone and you can wear it on your arm or wrist. Music is transmitted via Bluetooth headphones which will eliminated the tangle of wires so common with many of the other conventional headphones.

There’s no word yet as to whether this product will actually go into production. It does seem like it could be a hit. What do you think?

Radia Cell phone

April 18, 2007 by Tricia

radia_phone.jpg Do you believe that this circular object is actually a cell phone? Yep, it is. It’s a clear circular concept phone designed by Michael Laut. His Radia Cell Phone seems to draw it’s inspiration from coasters doesn’t it?

Almost everyone has a cell phone these days, and since they have become such a common item it’s become important for cellular phone makers to start creating designs that stand out from the crowd. Laut says “The Radia phone concept expresses simplicity in form and sophistication in function and user interface. The outer rim, which is made of brushed aluminum makes both a refined professional statement.”

The touch display is large enough to read and display many types of information. Yet the phone is small enough to easily fit into a pocket or small purse.

What do you think of this new mobile phone design? Would you purchase one? If you would buy one would you buy it just because it’s so unusual?

Some great webmaster forums that you should join

March 31, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve been keeping my eye out for great web, technology and webmaster discussion forums. I’ve been a member of some of these forums for quite a while but I’m discovering new forums regularly.

If you want to keep track of the latest tech news and search engine optimization techniques it’s a great idea to join webmaster related forums. Even if you are still rather new to owning a website or blogging. The more you learn, and the more that you can do on your own the better.

Posting and interacting on webmaster related forums is also a great way to meet others that share your interests and possibly gain links to sites that are similar to your own.

I found a post over on WebGeek that lists a number of top webmaster forums and communities. The numbers listed beside each forum listing is the number of registered members on the site as of the time of writing.

I was aware of, and a member of many of these forums and communities already, but there are a few that he’s listed that I must go and explore.

FTC moves to require disclosure for paid word of mouth marketing

December 14, 2006 by Tricia

The Washington Post published an article on December 12, FTC Moves to Unmask Word-of-Mouth Marketing which states that the Federal Trade Commission made a statement on Dec. 11th regarding word-of-mouth marketing campaigns where people are compensated to promote products to their peers will now have to disclose those relationships.

It’s not known exactly what percentage of marketing is now done through volunteer and paid word of mouth marketing campaigns, but it is clear that it has been increasing yearly. We’re seeing paid ads on web blogs, myspace pages and an increasing amount of on the street word of mouth marketing promotions.

Last June I was given an opportunity to participate in a voluntary word of mouth campaign for Nokia. I was given a Nokia 6682 Multimedia Smartphone by a “Marketing Buzz” creation company, all the accessories I could possibly need for the camera phone, some of which I still haven’t used, and a number of cards with information about the phone listed on them. I was told that the phone was being given to me completely free, but they would like to contact me in a few months in order to get my opinion on the phone and to see if I’d told anyone about the product. The phone was mine to keep with absolutely no obligation. I didn’t even have to answer the survey that they sent me if I didn’t want to, and I certainly didn’t have to promote the product in any way, but If I liked the phone would I please tell people about it?

Naturally I was totally thrilled to have been given a fancy new smartphone! Who wouldn’t be? I figured the phone itself, plus all of the accessories that they gave me was worth more than $500. I was on cloud 9. Of course I told my friends, family and co-workers about the phone and I even brought along some of the promotional cards that I’d been given when I went out to gatherings. I always told people exactly how I got the phone too.

That was my introduction into participating in word of mouth marketing. Would I do it again? Of course I would – particularly if it was a product that I could fit into my lifestyle. Would I tell others about it? Sure, why not – more so if I loved or hated the product.

I really don’t see any problem with marketing done in this manner. I suppose you could say my participation was voluntary, but I was compensated by being give a free cell phone to use and evaluate.

Advocacy groups are beginning to question whether some marketers are using such tactics (ads on web pages, peer to peer word of mouth) to dupe consumers into believing they are getting unbiased information.

They cite campaigns such as:

Sony Ericsson Mobile for its T68i mobile phone and digital camera. The initiative, called “Fake Tourist,” involved placing 60 actors posing as tourists at attractions in New York and Seattle to demonstrate the camera phone. The actors asked passersby to take their photo, which demonstrated the camera phone’s capabilities, but the actors did not identify themselves as representatives for Sony Ericsson.

What the FTC sought to do yesterday in its staff opinion was to note that such marketing could be deceptive if consumers were more likely to trust the product’s endorser “based on their assumed independence from the marketer.”

I suppose you could now say that I’ve embraced the paid form of word of mouth advertising. I write paid ads / paid posts on a few of my blogs. I do not disclose in every single paid post that I write that I’ve been paid to write the post. I have a disclosure policy on each of those sites which explains to my readers that I’ve been compensated to write some of my posts.

Am I being dishonest to my readers?

I don’t believe that I am because I have disclosed on my site, but not on every single paid post – that I am writing posts and being compensated. I also don’t believe that I’m duping my readers. I could never write a post about something that I didn’t believe in. If whatever I happen to be writing about is not a service, product or information that I can personally use I’ll still write about it if I think a large portion of my readers will find the site, product or service useful in their lives.

Just as many bloggers spontaneously write about great websites or products that they’ve recently discovered, I believe that had I discovered some of the services or products that I’ve been paid to write about on my own I still might have written a similar article upon discovery. So it’s a bonus when I get paid for something that I might very well have written about anyway.

It’s my blog. It’s my sites reputation on the line. If I start writing about products that I, or my readers, won’t use or begin to write in a manner that sounds like blatant advertising I’ll lose my readership and as a result lose my blog. I think most of the bloggers that I know that write paid ads feel the same way. They wouldn’t ruin their sites or reputation by writing about things they don’t feel are worthwhile publicizing.

I don’t have a problem with disclosure, but I also feel that If I were required to list every paid post as a paid post that my readers might just skip over those postings and potentially lose out on some information that might be helpful to them somewhere down the line. Besides, I try to tie many of the paid posts that I write about into my own life, so if my readers were to skip the paid posts they’d be missing a portion of “me” and my writing which is what drew them to the site in the first place.

I talk about being paid to blog frequently enough on all of my sites that very few people would ever end up leaving my site feeling duped.

The Washington Post article went on to say:

The FTC said it would investigate cases where there is a relationship between the endorser of a product and the seller that is not disclosed and could affect the endorsement. The FTC staff said it would go after violators on a case-by-case basis. Consequences could include a cease-and-desist order, fines and civil penalties ranging from thousands of dollars to millions of dollars. Engle said the agency had not brought any cases against word-of-mouth marketers.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see how exactly the FTC’s statement and subsequent investigations will affect word of mouth advertising and paid blog posts in particular. I’m not even certain that it would drastically affect paid blogging posts. When I write a paid post I’m not being paid directly by the company who’s product I’m writing about, I’m being paid my a company that they hired to secure my services.

Other forms of word of mouth marketing might be seen as being product promotion used in television series or movies. How many times have you see a TV show and all the computers that make it into your site while watching the show are made by the same company? Of course you’d have to clearly see the logo to know for sure- but of course we are shown the logo. The same for many of the drinks or other products that the characters on our favorite shows or in the movies use. The labels always face outward so that the viewers can see what the product is. Are the shows not being paid by those companies to prominently show their products? Are we the viewer informed that our favorite series is endorsing the product? No.

Do television commercials actually state that they’re a commercial being paid for by such and such a company? No. Do we feel duped? No not really.

If this FTC ruling ends up forcing me to list that I’m being paid by such and such a company to endorse the product of such and such a company – then Television and Radio programs had better start listing what products they are endorsing and who’s paying them to endorse the products as well. Fair is fair.

What do you think of the FTC’s statement and do you think it will affect you in any way?

UPDATE:

Apparently the proposal for the FTC to probe into word of mouth practices was rejected as stated In an article on Advertising Age on December, 11th. As I listed above the FTC is still open to probing the practices of word of mouth marketing on a case by case basis. To learn more about how they plan to open investigations read the article.

Deep Jive Interests brings up interesting points about affiliate programs and links that are used within the text of an article or post. On some sites these affiliate links are used multiple times and no where on these sites are there any form of a disclosure statement. Read the article to get his full point of view on the subject.
